Will they ever make Alita: Battle Angel 2? Director Robert Rodriguez is clear that there are certain possibilities thanks to Disney +.
Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron had always intended for Alita: Battle Angel 2 to exist, as they posed the story of the first installment with an open ending to be the beginning of a great saga. But after Disney bought 20th Century FOX all plans stalled. Actor Christoph Waltz has always suspected that the sequel never materialized because the film did not fit what Disney was looking for.
However, fans of the film, especially the online group called Alita Army, quickly launched a campaign demanding a sequel. They called on Cinemark theaters to re-release the film before the end of 2020, arguing that the screenings will help revive interest in making Alita: Battle Angel 2. The campaign was supported by James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez, since then it seems that the film studio is more willing to raise the sequel.
Disney + could be the solution.
While promoting his upcoming Netflix movie We Can Be Heroes, Robert Rodríguez revealed in an interview his plans for a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel 2 . According to the director, now that there is a war over the streaming service and they want to power Disney +, he is quite optimistic about returning to Iron City.
“I believe that everything is possible. Disney bought Fox, and they have Disney +, so it’s worth the conversation. I know other people would love to see the sequel, and I would love to do it. As for where it would go or how it would be done, I think the streaming platform has opened up a lot of opportunities. It’s already a pre-sold concept, you already have a built-in audience that wants to see it, and then it’s delivered to them in a way that’s the easiest for them to consume. Therefore, it is not a bad idea ”.
