Bitcoin Mining Is Driving People Insane in Quebec: Why Is Crypto So Noisy?

Bitcoin and cryptocurrency are extremely popular right now, and while the mining process is not environmentally friendly, it is extremely profitable for miners and investors, who are profiting handsomely as bitcoin’s value soars.

Bitfarms, a cryptocurrency manufacturing company, has a negative impact on Sherbrooke, a city about 150 kilometers east of Montreal.

According to a Wall Street Journal article, this bitcoin mining facility is constantly emitting a whiny drill-like sound that can be heard 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They appear to be losing their minds as a result of the constant drone. Why is bitcoin mining so noisy?

Bitcoin Mining

Bitcoin mining is the process of solving complex computational math problems (hashing puzzles) using complex computer hardware. To resolve the issue, a computer is given a block of bitcoins, and the process is repeated indefinitely.

According to sources, coin mining can be extremely time-consuming, costly, and unprofitable.

What about bitcoin mining is so obnoxious?

To set up a mining rig in this configuration, an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a graphics processing unit (GPU) (the more powerful, the better), or both are required.

When gaming laptops and PCs are overloaded, they can become extremely hot, necessitating the fans in the chassis to spin as quickly as possible to dissipate the heat. This can be quite a clamorous process, especially if you’re alone.

With hundreds or thousands of these computers performing calculations and consuming a significant amount of processing power, it’s unsurprising to hear their fans moan.

Lowering the temperature inside

Thermal throttling, which reduces system performance when temperatures exceed normal, is used by some mining operations to dissipate heat and keep systems operating at optimal temperatures.

Due to the risk of exceeding that limit, mining operations take extraordinary measures to maintain ideal temperatures. While some rigs rely on evaporative cooling and others on immersion cooling to keep them submerged in cooling liquids or oil coolants, the majority rely on fresh air cooling systems.

Mining operations consume an enormous amount of energy, rendering them unsuitable for our planet due to the power-hungry hardware and excessive cooling.
