It seems that directors, like Denis Villeneuve, who works for Warner Bros are not happy with the movie studio for releasing everything at once on HBO Max.
It seems like just a business decision, but since Warner Bros announced that the 2021 films will be released in theaters at the same time and HBO Max, all the directors and managers affected are complaining. Everyone except Patty Jenkins who has received a bonus because Wonder Woman 1984 will be the first to follow this strategy. Christopher Nolan has already protested and Denis Villeneuve is following the same path.
Denis Villeneuve believes that the heavily indebted AT&T “decided to sacrifice the entire Warner Bros. roster for 2021 in a desperate attempt to capture the attention of the audience” and “ensure its own survival on Wall Street” in the process. The director acknowledges that “public safety comes first” and says he fully supports the decision to delay the opening of DUNE by almost a year. However, he feels that by debuting the sci-fi adaptation on HBO Max “it could have wiped out the DUNE franchise. ”
“I firmly believe that the future of cinema will be on the big screen, no matter what any Wall Street dilettante says,” continues Denis Villeneuve. “Since the dawn of time, human beings have profoundly needed community storytelling experiences. Cinema on the big screen is more than a business. It is an art form that brings people together, celebrating humanity, enhancing our empathy with each other. It is one of the last collective artistic and face-to-face experiences that we share as human beings ”.
It should be taken into account that part of the financial problems that AT&T has, this decision elevates the streaming platform HBO Max and it may begin to compete very hard against Netflix, Amazon Video, Apple + and Disney +.
Will you make more DUNE movies?
Director Denis Villeneuve laid out the story of DUNE in two films and they have already made one. After its premiere, they would begin with the second part, but because of the pandemic, everything has been delayed. So if it doesn’t have a good box office because people want to see it on HBO Max, that may never happen and the plot is half-done.
DUNE will premiere on October 1, 2021. Directed by Denis Villeneuve it has a super cast headed by Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Josh Brolin, and Jason Momoa.
