HBO Gives Green Light To ‘The Last Of Us’ TV Show

The adaptation of the video game The Las of Us for HBO already has the approval of the Streaming service that has Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) as a scriptwriter and the creative director of the video game, Neil Druckmann.

The streaming service HBO has given the green light to the series based on the popular video game franchise by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and the game’s screenwriter and creative director, Neil Druckmann. HBO and Sony Pictures TV are producing alongside PlayStation Productions, Word Games, and game developer Naughty Dog.

“Craig and Neil are visionaries in a league of their own,” said HBO Executive Vice President of Programming Francesca Orsi. With them at the helm alongside the incomparable Carolyn Strauss, this series is sure to resonate with both die-hard fans of The Last of Us games and newcomers to this genre-defining saga. We are delighted to partner with Naughty Dog, Word Games, Sony, and PlayStation to adapt this epic and powerfully immersive story. ”

The series The Last of Us takes place 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization. It centers on Joel, a tough apocalypse survivor, who is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. The seemingly small job turns into a brutal journey as they depend on each other to survive.

“We are delighted to be working with HBO and this fantastic creative team to bring The Last of Us series to life,” said Sony Pictures TV Studios President Jeff Frost and PlayStation Productions Director Asad Qizilbash in a statement. “PlayStation’s groundbreaking storytelling and ingenuity is a natural complement to SPT’s creative approach. Our collaboration is a great example of our ‘One Sony’ philosophy at work. We look forward to developing even more iconic game IPs in the future. ”

HBO put The Last of Us in development in March and it is the latest video game franchise to feature an adaptation on a streaming service. Showtime is also working on a series based on Halo, which will premiere next year.

Mazin and Druckmann are executive producers of The Last of Us with Carolyn Strauss (Chernobyl, Game of Thrones), Evan Wells of Naughty Dog and Qizilbash, and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions. Johan Renck (Chernobyl) was set to direct the pilot but had to abandon it due to a scheduling conflict.
