In a world rife with all the issues, The 355 trailer presents a solution to end our global panic: A bar of badass women taking charge of the turmoil. Producer-star Jessica Chastain fronts the coming action flick as an American spy who begins an elite group of female agents from the world as they come along to hold an institution from releasing a wicked plan that would make a global disturbance.
The promo set to a terrifying version of Jay Z and Rihanna’s “Run This Town,” introduces Chastain’s cohorts:
Lupita Nyong’o as a British operational and computer expert; Penélope Cruz as a Colombian spy; Bingbing Follower as a Chinese agent, and Diane Kruger as a German envoy.
Chastain previously showed that she came up with the film’s idea while operating with the director Simon Kinberg on the X-Men franchise entry Dark Phoenix and Smash’s Theresa Rebeck writing the script. Marion Cotillard was at one point linked to costar, though Kruger later replaced her.
Chastain detailed the preproduction process in an Instagram video posted last summer, which saw Kruger and Chastain learning at a gun range and Fan and Nyong’o sporting boxing gloves.
“We are the studio,” Chastain said of her collaborative team in the clip. “Everyone owns the film, and now we’re making it.” The 355 — also starring Sebastian Stan and Édgar Ramírez, is in theaters on Jan. 15 via Universal Pictures.
If many people can always band together to stop some generic lousy guy from destroying the world with some doomsday device, so can a group of women.
That’s precisely what Universal Pictures is doing with The 355, a new action blockbuster that teams up Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger, and Bingbing Fan as an assembly of international operatives tasked with stopping some massive attack.
From Jessica Chastain said, “I’m putting together a team,” to the inevitable gunpoint face-off before an exposition-filled conversation, this movie is full of all the tropes that have been in countless macho action movies.
But it’s these five badass women at the center of it, and I kind of love it in all its hokey glory. Lupita Nyong’o even kisses her thankless husband goodbye before she goes off on this mission.
