Netizens are well aware of Leonardo DiCaprio’s love for vaping. Apart from the usual paparazzi shots, the actor previously smoked an electronic cigarette at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2016 whilst being seated as an audience.
However, things weren’t always out in the open earlier.
DiCaprio’s first acting stint was in 1991’s Critters 3. He continued to rise as an up and coming actor to look out for but it wasn’t until his portrayal of Arnie Grape in 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape did the actor become a force to be reckoned with. His acting chops earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the Academy.
However, even superstars such as Leonardo DiCaprio are not immune to the wrath of parents and like the rest of us often end up hiding things.
Photographer Steve Eichner in his recent book In The Limelight: The Visual Ecstasy Of NYC Nightlife In The ‘90s revealed an interesting tidbit about the Titanic actor.
He revealed that in 1994, the photographer once captured a picture of DiCaprio buying cigarettes from a ‘cigarette-and-candy girl’ during a party for Nicolas Cage’s thriller Red Rock West at NYC’s Club USA.
Then 20-year-old DiCaprio approached Eichner and requested the photographer to not use the photo wherein he is seen buying cigarettes as he doesn’t want his mom to know. The Revenant actor instead offered Eichner to take more paparazzi pictures of him if he wished.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of DiCaprio’s fear of being caught in the act. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape star, Johnny Depp shared an anecdote during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2016 about his then co-star DiCaprio on the sets to not ask him for “a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again”.
It’s no secret that DiCaprio is very close to his mother Irmelin Indenbirken, given he went to great lengths to make sure he doesn’t upset his mother. The Inception star brought his mother as a date to many of his film premieres and multiple times to Oscar and Golden Globe ceremonies.
The duo worked together on the 2007 documentary about global warming and climate change titled The 11th Hour.
Over the years, DiCaprio has switched to electronic cigarettes and even helped Twilight star Robert Pattinson to quit smoking and trade it for vaping instead.
