Warner Bros. has decided to continue feeding the expectations of those who eagerly await the new ‘ Mortal Kombat ‘, a return to the classic fighting video game that, with James Wan in production, is hoping to amend the flat to the first adaptations of the title, ‘ Mortal Kombat ‘ (Paul WS Anderson, 1995) and ‘ Mortal Kombat: Annihilation ‘ (John R. Leonetti, 1997), enjoyable only from the fortunately blind nostalgia.
After knowing the first images of the film, the production company has decided to share its extensive official synopsis:
“In ‘Mortal Kombat’, the MMA fighter Cole Young, used to getting beat up for money, does not know where he comes from, or why Emperor Shang Tsung of Outworld has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, a Cryomancer from that World Outside, to hunt down Cole. Fearing for the safety of his family, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces commander who bears the same strange dragon mark Cole was born with. Soon, he will find himself in the temple of Lord Raiden, an ancient god and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants refuge to those who bear the mark. There, Cole trains with the experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and the rebel mercenary Kano, as he prepares to face Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high-stakes battle across the universe. But will Cole be pressured enough to unlock his arcana, the immense power within his soul, in time to save not just his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?“
The unknown Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, will therefore be the protagonist and common thread of a title that most staunch fans have already encountered a problem: where is Johnny Cage?
Cage is the only one of the six selectable characters from the original game who doesn’t seem to have found a niche in this cinematic reinterpretation. With Liu Kang ( Ludi Lin ), Sonya Blade ( Jessica McNamee ), Kano ( Josh Lawson ), Raiden ( Tadanobu Asano ), Sub-Zero ( Joe Taslim ), and Scorpion ( Hiroyuki Sanada ) present, why forget one to create a new protagonist? Isn’t Cole Young a future Johnny Cage?
