Here’s what we know about The Meg 2, a 2018 blockbuster sequel starring Jason Statham. The Meg, directed by Jon Turteltaub, received largely positive reviews but marked an interesting new entry to the sub-genre of Sharksploitation.
The film also introduced the actress Li Bingbing to many Western moviegoers for the first time as a Chinese-American co-production.
Now, it seems like one of the most polarizing filmmakers in cinema is on track for The Meg 2.
Statham describes a disgraced rescue diver, named Jonas Taylor, in The Meg. Jonas spends his time swinging beer in Thailand five years after an aquatic disaster and dreaming about the past.
Meanwhile, Lori, Taylor’s ex-wife, engages in a pioneering Western Pacific Ocean expedition and comes face-to-face with an unseen creature that Jonas had dreamed about five years ago.
For a particularly risky mission in historically unexplored waters, members of the Mana One research facility recruit Statham’s character, when their target is a megalodon, a shark species that had supposedly been extinct two million years ago.
The Meg is based on Meg: A Novel of Deep Horror, a 1997 book by Steve Alten.
The Meg kills several characters, including a billionaire who erroneously names a whale as one of two megalodons found.
Jonas manages to beat the big bad in the final act and then faces another major obstacle. He must confront his romantic feelings towards Suyin’s colleague/love interest (Li). Here’s what we’re expecting for Meg 2 here.
Since October 2018, The Meg 2 has been in the works, effectively right after the original film was released.
By early 2019, when Ben Wheatley was announced as The Meg 2 director, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura reported that a script was in the works, and the sequel gathered steam in October 2020.
For helming horror films such as Kill List and Sightseers, the English filmmaker is best known. With High-Rise, Free Shooting, and the 2020 Netflix adaptation, Rebecca, Wheatley has tackled other genres in the last few years.
The Meg 2 – Release Date
If The Meg 2 follows the development schedule of the original film, it won’t be out for a few years. Reports say that the shooting for the film would likely commence by mid-2021, with a script in order and Wheatley ready to lead.
Post-production would potentially take up most of 2022, meaning that the digital effects will be bigger and stronger.
We’re expecting that in 2023, The Meg 2 will be launched as a summer blockbuster. We will be updating you with more in the future.
The Meg 2 – Cast
In The Meg 2, Statham is set to reprise his part and is supposedly going to be involved in the overall creative process.
The supporting cast has not been officially confirmed, but it is planned to return most of the “key talent” In that scenario, along with Ruby Rose and Page Kennedy, The Meg 2 would possibly feature the aforementioned Li, among others.
The Meg 2 – Plot Details
For Statham’s Jonas, who regains the trust of his colleagues and establishes a close relationship with Li’s Suyin and her daughter Meiying, The Meg plays out as a redemption tale for (Sophia Cai).
Taylor obviously displays an interest in Suyin after beating the megalodon, but still seems to realize that he may not be ready for a relationship.
Most of the film involves Jonas deliberately endangering his life to save others, and in the end, he also decides to kill himself.
For The Meg 2, of course, the core tension would revolve around sharks but expect the subtext to reflect on Statham’s character’s psychology and how it impacts his friendship with the smitten Suyin.
