After the good reception of ‘ Superniños ‘ on Netflix, Robert Rodríguez wants to continue exploring that cross between action, comedy and family cinema starring children. And he will do so by recovering one of his most successful films, ‘ Spy Kids ‘, which has just announced a ‘reboot’ that could shape the entire franchise.
The 2001 film introduced us to a peculiar family. One of the chief themes of Spy Kids is the unity of the family. The films also play with the idea of children having adult duties, and how keeping secrets from family members can have a negative effect on relationships. The first film also administers greatly with sibling competition and the ability of older teenagers.
The main series follows the adventures of Carmen and Juni ( Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara ) discover that their parents, Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez ( Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino ), are international superspies who have just been kidnapped by TV host Fegan Floop ( Alan Cumming ) and that they are his only hope. The rest of their family are observers as well, including their parental grandparents, and estranged uncle Machete. The films have an outstanding Latino theme, as Rodriguez is of Mexican descent. The production was a huge success: it grossed around $ 147.9 million worldwide and was followed by several equally successful sequels, as well as a Netflix animated series, ‘ Spy Kids: Mission Critical ‘, in which Rodríguez served as executive producer.
The filmmaker now wants to continue that legacy started by the famous film with a ‘reboot’ of the story and its characters, although, as Deadline declared in the North American media, with the intention of not repeating itself but rather “reimagining” the saga. Meanwhile, he is already working on the sequel to ‘Superchildren’ for Netflix, so there is no one who overshadows him in adrenaline-pumping family movies.
