Viggo Mortensen, actor famous for his portrayal in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as Aragorn has expressed concern about the upcoming Amazon series set during the Second Age of Middle-earth.

Actor Viggo Mortensen has spoken in a recent interview about his thoughts on the series set in the Second Age of The Lord of the Rings. The actor played Aragorn in the original trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and it was the role that launched him to stardom.

Not much is currently known about the series except for Amazon’s recent announcement of recent cast signings and filming is already underway in New Zealand after being delayed like most film and television productions due to the pandemic of coronavirus. The series is believed to take place during the Second Age of Middle-earth. There are many events that can be brought into the series from this era of history created by Tolkien , including the rise of Sauron and the creation of the One Ring that drives the plot of Jackson’s original trilogy. Unfortunately, because the Second Age takes place thousands of years before the Jackson films, Viggo Mortensen and other actors from the original trilogy will not be able to appear in it.

In an interview with NME on the occasion of the premiere of his latest work Falling , he spoke about the Lord of the Rings trilogy that has just been released in 4K remastered and whether there was any part of Aragorn’s history that would have involved him. liked to explore.

“There was a scene that we shot as a kind of memory flashback. It was from the dating days when he met Arwen, and we filmed it right before we took a break, so she was clean shaven and very pretty. They had tried to make me look as young as possible. He had different hair and dressed like an elf. It was a scene from the book where they were walking through this flowery meadow. It was a beautiful sequence, but it was obviously not necessary for the movie. I had never seen it, but I enjoyed filming that scene. It would be nice to see it actually, it’s not in the extended editions either. ”

He also talked about Tolkien’s upcoming series set in Middle Earth and expressed concern about it. “[I’m worried that] they try to be like Game Of Thrones and have a certain level of arbitrary violence and things like that? I dont know. I know it is JA Bayona, who is a Spanish director who is very talented. They are doing it in New Zealand so I imagine they would benefit from the advice of Peter Jackson and maybe some of the crew members. I think they have every opportunity to get it right. They have a good example to follow ”.

Comparisons to Game of Thrones are unavoidable

People already did it to the HBO series during the rise and after its fall. However, the Amazon series outstrips the series based on the work of George RR Martin in many respects as Tolkien’s vast mythology is developed enough that the series does not have to fill in too many gaps in the plot. In fact, they are not even allowed to alter anything that Tolkien already established in his universe as everything told in the series must be directly in line with established canon. The creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and DB Weiss, had the problem that they ran out of source material a little more in the middle of the run of the series and many consider that this is the point at which the quality of the series dropped substantially.
