On his way back to the capital, Unites States President Donald Trump shared with reporters and publications, that over his dinner with Apple’s CEO Tim Cook on Friday night, the latter made a good case saying that Samsung will get a competitive advantage over Apple given the tariffs levied over China by the US government.
Trump regarded his dinner meeting with Cook as a good one, further sharing that he has great respect for Tim Cook along with detailing about the case made by Cook regarding the South Korean tech giant Samsung not having to pay any tariffs unlike Apple.
On being asked how good a competitor Samsung is to Apple, he replied that it is Apple’s number.
One competitor and since Samsung is based out of South Korea and is not needed to pay tariffs which made the President say that he will think about the compelling case Cook presented to him.
A 10 percent import tax will be levied on Apple products later this year, most of which are assembled in China.
While products like iPhone, iPad, Mac Book won’t get hit with this tax until mid December this year whilst keeping the holiday season in mind; Apple’s other products including Apple Watch and Air Pods will have to start paying the 10 percent import tax come September 1st this year itself.
Given the trade war between the Trump administration and China, Apple is looking to oven its manufacturing to a different location, while Samsung being South Korean, is hardly affected by these circumstances as bulk of its manufacturing is undertaken in locations like South Korea and Vietnam and has a much more diversified supply chain.
The dinner announcement had been made by the President on Friday morning, prior to the dinner which took place later that day.
