The return of licenses, the multiverse, and television series make Marvel seem like it has almost limitless possibilities. However, let’s not forget that behind everything there is a master plan and a lot of thought. Just as anything can happen now in Marvel, the connection between works forces an increasing number of projects to coordinate with each other, greatly limiting the individual freedom of each one.
Jac Schaeffer, the creator of WandaVision, has spoken precisely about his limitations to write a series that, due to its characteristics, could have been even crazier. Schaeffer has told Digital Spy that Disney + gave him a “list of characters” with whom he had to work on the series, without leaving it.
They don’t give us a free pass. Marvel has its ideas and works interconnected above. There were characters that suggested a bigger list to me. With Randall Clark and Kat Dennings, I thought it was a good excuse to work with two people that I greatly admire. And also, I saw a very clear way for them to fit together. I’ve worked on other Marvel productions before, and it’s always like, “Here are some ideas. Does it work? Doesn’t it work?” Everything needs to have a reason to be there, right? It’s not about fitting things together, that’s why I think movies and series work well, because there’s an organic quality to all of those options.
Despite limited creative freedom at Disney, Schaeffer said he was very happy with the series he created and ultimately did not wish he had included any more characters. One of the connections marked, for example, is the presence of SWORD agent Monica Rambeau. WandaVision is a limited series of only 9 chapters, so we’ll get to the bottom of it very soon.
