Results are estimates based only on the figures you enter, for information and education only. They are not investment advice or a forecast. Crypto and stock markets carry real risk, including the loss of capital.

Total return is more than price

The headline gain on a stock — the difference between what you paid and what you sold for — is only part of the story. Dividends paid along the way are real return too, and for many established companies they make up a large share of long-run performance. This calculator adds them in, so your total return reflects both capital gains and income.

The annualised return, or CAGR, is the single most useful figure for comparing investments held for different lengths of time. It answers the question: what steady yearly rate would have produced this result? A 60% total return sounds impressive until you learn it took ten years to achieve — an annualised rate under 5%. Always look at the annualised figure before judging whether a return was actually good. Past returns, of course, never guarantee future ones.
